Being in a San Francisco on a bank holiday meant I had the day to myself in order to explore and find other ways to occupy my time. The day started well with 11 hours or so of sleep and then I set off on a walk about town. I long ago discovered that you really get the feel of a town not by hitting key tourist spots or by driving from one location to the other but my running or walking around on your own two feet. So even though I feel like I know San Francisco pretty well (having been here multiple times and ran a marathon here last year) I still discovered quite a few new spots on my 10 mile walk today. Granted, I stopped a lot at shops, In-N-Out burger, and other key places, but I walked from 12:30 today until 8:30 today and feel like I got a lot in.

It's funny sometimes how small a city can be mileage-wise yet feel so huge if you don't put things into scope. Last week I walked for a while in LA and managed to only cover about 6 miles even though I walked through Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Downtown LA, etc. So the moral of the story here is get out and walk around a little bit when you are in a new city. You might be surprised what you find. (12:56am)

I just got back to my hotel from literally walking all over West LA, Hollywood, and Beverly Hills and it was quite an experience. For one it was neat to see some of the sites (although all the stores I specifically planned to walk to were closed by the time I got there) and get a feel for the town, but also to randomly find cool places to grab coffee, eat dinner, etc. Not to mention things like unintentionally ending up in the gay district (where I learned what Proposition 8 was all about and why people were driving around with say no to Prop 8 signs) seeing parties at places that I am now watching on the local news, etc.

However, despite all this, I think the coolest thing was seeing people so excited about Obama winning the election. People were yelling on the street, bars were full of people watching the TVs and cheering, cars drove around honking their horns and yelling "Obama". Back home, there are at least 5 of the 20 houses on our street with McCain signs int heir yards - so somehow I don't image there was quite the same level celebration there. (12:04am)
